DrawZal permissions and data
DrawZal asks for no permission to draw with the pen, arrows, shapes, and text. Only four features that capture the screen (the magnifier, Freeze Screen, FlashShot, and copying a flashlight area) need Screen Recording permission, and your screen, drawings, and snapshots never leave your Mac.

When is Screen Recording permission needed?
| Feature | Screen Recording |
|---|---|
| Pen, arrows, shapes, text, highlighter, number badges | Not needed |
| Ghost Mode, Fade, whiteboard, flashlight, click effect | Not needed |
| Snapshots, copying drawings | Not needed (they save drawings, not the screen) |
| Magnifier flashlight | Needed |
| Freeze Screen | Needed |
| Full-Screen FlashShot | Needed |
| Copying a flashlight area | Needed |
The first time you use one of these four features, macOS asks for permission and DrawZal shows where to allow it near the bottom of the screen. Until you allow it, only that feature does nothing and everything else keeps working. Screen captures leave out DrawZal’s own windows and the pointer.
How do I allow Screen Recording?
| macOS | Where to allow it |
|---|---|
| macOS 15 or later | System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording |
| macOS 14 | System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen Recording |
Turn DrawZal on in the list. If it still doesn’t work after you allow it, remove DrawZal from the list and allow it again.
Why doesn’t DrawZal need Accessibility permission?
DrawZal never asks for Accessibility or Input Monitoring permission. The only shortcuts it receives while you use other apps are ⌥⇥, ⌃⇥, and F1, which it registers with macOS as hot keys. Every other key reaches DrawZal only while it is in front.
For the fn key, DrawZal only checks whether it is held, and the click effect over other apps watches mouse buttons only. Apart from those three shortcuts, keys you press in other apps are not received.
What does DrawZal send over the internet?
The only internet access DrawZal makes is checking for updates. Release builds download new-version information and new versions from download.drawzal.com, and your screen, drawings, snapshots, and system information are never sent.
Update checks happen every 4 hours, and you can turn them off in Settings › General › Updates. Getting started explains how updates install.
Where are my settings and snapshots stored?
| Data | Where it lives |
|---|---|
| Settings and shortcuts | The user defaults on this Mac (ai.devbrothers.drawzal) |
| Snapshots | ~/Library/Application Support/DrawZal/snapshots.json |
| Drawings on screen | In memory only, gone when you quit DrawZal (only snapshots remain) |
