DrawZal keyboard shortcuts

DrawZal has 3 global shortcuts that work in any app, assignable shortcuts for drawing mode, and 30 single-key actions you press without modifiers. All shortcuts on this page are defaults, and you can change them in Settings › Shortcuts.

Global shortcuts that work in any app

Global shortcuts work even when DrawZal is not the frontmost app. They start and stop drawing and toggle Ghost Mode, which keeps your drawings on screen while you click the app underneath.

Single-key actions without modifiers

While you are drawing, pressing one key without modifiers such as ⌘ or ⌥ runs the action below. You can give each key a different action or "Do Nothing" in Settings › Shortcuts under "Single-Key Actions (While Drawing, No Modifiers)".

Modifier and mouse actions

PressAction
Tap ⇧Turns the flashlight on or off. You can turn this off in Settings.
Hold fnWhile drawing, clicks pass through to the app underneath. In Ghost Mode, you can draw.
⌘-dragMoves drawings like the hand tool, even in the middle of drawing.
⌥⌘-dragCopies drawings and moves the copy.
⌃-dragScissors: erases the drawings inside the area you drag over.
⌃⌥-dragErases with the eraser.
⌥-dragDraws with the paired tool (brush and quick arrow, arrow and line, rectangle and ellipse).
⌥-clickStamps the next number badge where you click (brush, quick arrow, highlighter, arrow, line, rectangle, ellipse, and text tools). Pro
⇧-dragSnaps lines and arrows to 45° steps and makes rectangles and ellipses square and round.
⌘-double-clickSelects one drawing to edit. Add ⇧ to select more.
Right-clickStops drawing (the "Hide Drawings" setting). With the default settings your drawings are cleared too; start drawing again and press ⌘Z to bring them back.
⌘-right-clickOpens the Tool Wheel.
⌥-right-clickOpens the Color Wheel.
⌃-right-clickClears the screen.
ScrollChanges the hue (you can switch it to thickness in Settings). With the flashlight it changes the radius, with the eraser its size, and while typing the text size.
⌘-scrollChanges the thickness 1 pt at a time, including selected drawings.
⌥-scroll, pinchChanges the magnifier zoom. Pinching while typing changes the text size.
Pen tablet eraser endErases drawings.

You can change the right-click actions in Settings › Mouse & Keyboard › Right-click.

How do I change a shortcut?

  1. Open Settings… from the DrawZal menu bar icon and choose Shortcuts. You can also type the action name into "Search Settings" at the top of the window.
  2. Click the item, then press the new shortcut. If another action already uses that shortcut, the two actions swap shortcuts.
  3. Press ⌫ to remove the shortcut, or Esc to cancel.

How do I move my shortcuts to another Mac?

Use "Shortcuts Preset" in Settings › Presets to export your shortcuts to a file and import it on another Mac. "Settings Preset (Includes Shortcuts)" moves your other settings too. See Settings and presets for details.
